New York Angels is one of the largest and most active angel investment groups on the East Coast. Our 75 members are experienced entrepreneurs, CEO's, venture capitalists and business leaders who have founded, funded and built world-class companies.
We mentor and coach the entrepreneurs in whom we invest, serve on their boards, provide contacts and assist with team building, strategic planning and fundraising. Most of the opportunities we look at are in early-stage emerging growth companies in the Northeast. Since 1997, we and members of our predecessor group have invested over $30 million in more than 65 ventures. We have a full-time staff, as well as an extensive and comprehensive web-based application process powered by Angelsoft, and we request that all applications be submitted online.
Each month, from among the 20-30 companies who submit funding requests, we invite the 10-15 companies who most closely fit our criteria to come for individual, in-person meetings with our screening committee. From among those, the committee typically invites three companies to present their plans to our full membership at our monthly breakfast meeting. Prior to the presentation, we offer (indeed, require!) that the company go through training, at our expense, with a professional presentation coach, who will help assure that the final pitch is a compelling one for our members. While most of the deals in which we have invested are in the technology, media, Internet and financial/business services areas, we are willing to consider other opportunities.
However, please note that we do not look at real estate or film production deals. We ask that entrepreneurs read through our investment ranges listed above and on our website prior to submitting an application, to ensure that we're a potentially good match. Investment Criteria: The majority of our deals are on the East Coast, first outside round, Series A Preferred, usually in tech- , Internet- or media-related early stage companies that have already raised funds from founders, friends and family, and have started (or are very close to starting) generating revenue.
Our members, acting independently but coordinating through New York Angels, typically invest a total of between $250K and $750K per round, at pre-money valuations in the $750K $2.5m range, request a board seat, and are happy to syndicate with other major angel groups and early stage VC funds. This includes the half dozen early stage New York-based VC funds that are themselves members of our group. We have a co-investment fund that will automatically invest alongside our individual members if interest in a deal meets certain thresholds. (Note that since New York Angels is a not-for-profit organization of individual members (unlike a VC fund), we ask for a $150 application fee upon submission of a plan, which helps to defray our expenses.)
